Description:

LaTeX is a code language for typesetting documents, for example your thesis, scientific paper, or hand-in. It produces professional looking documents and typesets mathematical expressions well, making it the standard (and often requirement) for academic documents.

This workshop requires no prior knowledge of LaTeX and will help you through the rough start which new users of LaTeX experience. We show you how to correctly format text and how to include mathematical expressions, tables and images.

For this workshop we will use Overleaf. You can create a free account on Overleaf.com. Please bring a laptop since the workshop will include exercises.

This workshop is organised by the TeXniCie committee of study association A-Eskwadraat. We facilitate use of LaTeX for exact science studies, by organizing extracurricular courses. Information about our activities can be found on our website texnicie.nl.

Description Round 2 (intermediate):

LaTeX is a code language for typesetting documents, for example your thesis, scientific paper, or hand-in. It produces professional looking documents and typesets mathematical expressions well, making it the standard (and often requirement) for academic documents.

This workshop requires some experience with LaTeX. We assume you know how to typeset basic mathematical expressions, format text, include images and use sections. If you wish to refresh your knowledge, we suggest you read the slides of this presentation:
LaTeX_Week1_Handout_v1.pdf
If you did the beginners workshop in round 1, you will have the necessary experience with LaTeX.

In the workshop we will cover:

  • Complicated mathematical expressions
  • Basic chemical equations
  • Tables and images
  • Cross-referencing equations, tables and images
  • Adding a simple bibliography

For this workshop we will use Overleaf. You can create a free account on Overleaf.com. Please bring a laptop since the workshop will include excercises.

Question & Answer

Question: References don't appear in the bibliography. Biber shows this reference as (book, label). How do I fix it?
Answer: Set Biber as the default bibliography manager (see thesis manual). With some older LaTeX distributions Biber is missing. Biber is often installed in C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.9\miktex\bin\x64. Is it missing? Update MiKTeX, or, in the worst case, reinstall MiKTeX.
